CITTADELLA DEL COMMIATO
Ferrara (Italy), 2012
A contest addressed to the realization of a solid devoted to the last part of the path of life, where the livings, in their grief, may pay their last respects to their loved ones through the dearest memories.
The design exteriorly presents itself as a metallic “machine”. The weathering steel, whose surface has been repeatedly folded, express the metaphor for the suffering that the location recalls and contains. The internal paths their selves, almost dramatically twisted through the ribs, create bottlenecks that direct the sight and the walking to areas standing in line where light rays filter with more and more controlled dynamics.
A progressively shrunk perforation through the metallic surface accompanies the journey from the entrance to the center of the complex, with a gradual weakening of the natural illumination, aimed at bringing the human being to a psychological condition of spiritual gathering and meditation, heightened in the burial chamber by a floor-sliding beam of light, in order to make this space rarefied, where the casket almost seems to float.
The composition is completed by the ceremonial place, a gathering space geometrically projected outward and, in turn, symbolically towards the sky. This enables to temporarily feel relieved by the solemnity of the ceremony, facing a green square open to the city.
